23 Elliot Street

Charlestowne

Completed in 2003, this three-story residence occupies the site of a 19th century, three-story rice storage facility, and most recently, the site of the circa 1936 Charleston Day School building. Constructed of hand-molded brick laid in the American bond pattern, the building features a standing seam copper, hipped roof with hipped dormers, a dentil brick cornice, a decorative belt course above the third floor, and single pane, nine-over-nine light windows with jack arches. The main entrance is centered on the five bay west facade and is set beneath a second story iron balcony. The south facade is distinguished by a three-story section with square columns and tripartite windows.

23 Elliott Street succeeds as an infill structure by being compatible in height with the warehouse that once occupied the site and by the use of traditional materials such as brick, copper, iron, and wood. These elements, combined with careful attention to architectural detail, enable the building to be successfully integrated into the surrounding historic streetscape. The residence was designed by Randolph Martz, Architect and constructed by Opus Development of Charleston. The property is owned by John and Karen McDonald.
