Spirituals of the Carolina Lowcountry

The music and Gullah lyrics of forty-nine spirituals, collected in the Carolina Low Country between 1922 and 1931 by the Society for the Preservation of Spirituals (Spiritual
Society.) This multi-generational effort to preserve these songs and to perform
them in the old way is recounted in an 8-page preface that also describes the
way they were sung in churches, citing examples among the 81 recordings found
on the Compact Discs sold separately. The appendices include a guide to the
94 spirituals collected by this organization, where to find them and the form in
which they are available ie. lyrics only, lyrics with music, recordings of
African-American congregations, and recordings of the Spiritual Society. 2004.
