The early 19th century houses, near the College of Charleston in the borough of Harleston, reflect a diverse population of planters, intellectuals and prosperous merchants. Sizeable lots divided from the parish church Glebes Lands allowed for a scale of residential architecture synonymous with Greek, Italianate, and Gothic Revival styles. Streets in this area were named for prominent men important to Charleston’s history, including Sir Charles Greville Montagu, royal colonial governor of South Carolina and William Pitt, the defender of American Rights in the Stamp Act crisis. |
