Bohicket Road State Scenic Highway Threatened

Bohicket Road | Johns Island, SC

Charleston County recently put forth proposed improvements to a 9-mile stretch of Bohicket Road on Johns Island between Maybank Highway and Betsy Kerrison Parkway, which is designated a State Scenic Byway. All five alternatives propose widening the road, drastically altering its characteristic tree canopy, and impacting dozens of businesses and homes, many of which are African American heirs’ properties.

The PSC has urged the County to seek more sensitive solutions, based on overwhelming adverse impacts to this culturally significant corridor and resounding community opposition. As demonstrated by the outcome of the Highway 61 road improvement process last year, less invasive measures, such as lowering and enforcing speed limits, have proven effective and allowed for the preservation of the two-lane road and hundreds of trees.
