ABOUT THE PRESERVATION SOCIETY OF CHARLESTON
Founded in 1920, the Preservation Society of Charleston (PSC) is the oldest grassroots preservation organization in the nation. Our mission is to serve as a strong advocacy leader for citizens concerned about preserving Charleston’s distinctive character, quality of life, and diverse neighborhoods.
INTERNSHIP SUMMARY
The PSC is seeking two motivated and detail-oriented West Ashley Neighborhood Documentation Interns for Summer 2026. These internships offer the opportunity to contribute directly to a documentation project focused on strengthening the preservation infrastructure for West Ashley’s historic neighborhoods.
Working as part of a small collaborative team, the two interns will support PSC’s efforts to document historic resources in Old Windermere and Byrnes Downs, two early- to mid-twentieth century suburban neighborhoods with rich architectural and cultural significance. Building on existing Area Character Appraisals, interns will perform in-depth field survey, research, and documentation to help advance future National Register Historic District nominations.
Interns will also contribute to the creation of an ArcGIS StoryMap to share neighborhood history and character with West Ashley residents and the broader public.
Through our internship program, the PSC aims to cultivate the next generation of professionals in the field of historic preservation. As part of the PSC team, interns will have the opportunity to collaborate regularly with PSC Staff and community stakeholders, and participate in organizational events.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Both interns will work together and share responsibilities, which include:
- Conducting fieldwork to document historic buildings and streetscapes in Old Windermere and Byrnes Downs using ArcGIS Survey123
- Completing architectural inventory forms, including photography, and description of architectural styles and character-defining features
- Researching neighborhood developmental history using archival materials, historic maps, planning documents, and previous studies
- Assisting in drafting National Register nomination components, including architectural descriptions and statements of significance
- Helping develop an engaging ArcGIS StoryMap to visualize survey findings and neighborhood heritage
- Collaborating with PSC staff, community stakeholders, and each other to refine the survey methodology and support project outreach initiatives
QUALIFICATIONS
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in historic preservation, architecture, history, planning, geography, public history, urban studies, or a related field
- Strong research, writing, and analytical skills
- Interest in architectural history and community-based preservation
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a small team
- Strong organizational and time-management skills
- Comfort with fieldwork in summer conditions
- Experience with GIS, architectural survey, archival research, or digital storytelling tools is a plus but not required
Please submit a cover letter, resume, three professional references, and a relevant project or writing sample to Laurel Fay, Manager of Preservation & Research, at [email protected] by Friday, February 20, 2026. The strongest cover letters will clearly articulate the applicant’s interest in historic documentation of West Ashley neighborhoods and its alignment with PSC’s mission. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis. Early submission is encouraged.
