Models and exhibits will showcase what could be built on Union Pier downtown, and project consultants will be on hand take input and answer questions

This Thursday, the public will have another chance to weigh in on the future of Union Pier. Due to the last event being cut short by Hurricane Ian, the State Ports Authority and Lowe Development team are hosting a second open house to gather public input on this massive project. The stakes are very high for the redevelopment of this 70-acre waterfront property and how it can contribute to the character and livability of downtown Charleston. What is currently a blank slate could become a world-class, resident-centric development with public green space, a diverse array of housing options, and neighborhood-serving businesses. This is why it is critical for you to engage in the dialogue shaping Union Pier — please join us Thursday and share your vision for the future of the site. ARCHITECTURAL MERIT PUBLIC INPUT SESSION Thursday, Oct. 13, 12-2PM 2 George Street, 1st Floor Gaillard Center Public Meeting Room

Last month, City Council deferred action on an ordinance amendment that would eliminate the “architectural merit” provision that allows an opportunity for an additional floor through the BAR process. Now is your opportunity to weigh in on this important issue. While created with good intentions to encourage architectural excellence, this provision has come to be viewed by developers as an automatic entitlement to extra height, rather than a discretionary option for the BAR to reward outstanding design proposals. The PSC supports this ordinance proposal as a reasonable policy change to address unprecedented growth pressure in Charleston, and we urge you to stand with us – please attend the public input session tomorrow and let your voice be heard.
