Join the PSC and Atlas Preservation at a headstone restoration workshop.

Join the Preservation Society of Charleston and James Island Presbyterian Church as we host a stop on the Atlas Preservation 48 State Tour.

This free, hands-on workshop will cover the proper cleaning, resetting, and long-term care of historic headstones within a cemetery setting. Led by John Appell, renowned monument and gravestone restoration professional and CEO of Atlas Preservation, the program combines live demonstrations with guided practice, allowing participants to apply preservation techniques directly to existing headstones and burial markers.

Event Details: The workshop will take place outdoors.

  • Participants should come prepared for fieldwork and dress comfortably in clothes they don’t mind getting dirty.
  • Sturdy, closed-toe shoes are required.
  • We recommend bringing a water bottle, bug spray, a hat, and knee pads or a garden kneeling pad. Some participants may also find a camp chair or stool helpful for comfort during the workshop.
  • Please being a lunch, snacks, and a water bottle. We will have a cooler of ice water on site throughout the workshop.

All tools, cleaning solutions, and equipment for the workshop will be provided by Atlas Preservation and the Preservation Society of Charleston.

Registration is recommended but not required.

Rain Plan: If light rain is in the forecast, this event will continue as planned. If more inclement weather is predicted, participants will be notified of cancellation by 7 pm on June 12.

We look forward to learning—and preserving history—together!
