Join The Preservation Society of Charleston and conservator, Frances Henderson Ford, on May 16, 2026, 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM, at St. John’s Chapel Cemetery for a hands-on Headstone Cleaning Workshop. This workshop offers a unique opportunity to learn proper preservation techniques for caring for historic headstones while helping protect an important piece of our shared history.

Participants will receive guided instruction on safe and effective cleaning methods, followed by the chance to practice these skills outdoors in the cemetery. No experience is required to participate!

This event is free to attend, but registration is required. Space is limited to 25 participants.

Please come prepared for outdoor, hands-on work. We recommend wearing sturdy clothing and closed-toe shoes. You may also wish to bring gloves, knee pads/gardening pad, sunscreen, and bug spray for your comfort.

Guided instruction will be from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM. If you would like stay longer to practice cleaning headstones, please plan to bring a lunch.

All tools, cleaning solutions, and equipment for the workshop will be provided by the Preservation Society of Charleston.

Rain plan: In case of inclement weather, this event will be rescheduled. All registered participants will be notified of the new date.
