Hutchinson House Volunteer Workday
- May 1, 2026 9:00am – 12:00pm EDT
Join the PSC for a volunteer workday at the historic Hutchinson House on Edisto Island.
Join the PSC for a volunteer workday at the historic Hutchinson House on Edisto Island – a remarkable site with deep roots in Reconstruction-era history. Built by freedman Henry Hutchinson in the late 19th century, the house stands as a powerful testament to resilience, land ownership, and community-building after emancipation. The property is protected by an easement with the Preservation Society of Charleston and was recognized earlier this year with a Carolopolis Award for its impressive restoration work.
Volunteers will help care for the site through hands-on stewardship, including weeding, clearing debris, raking, and light landscape maintenance. There will also be opportunities to assist with screening soil for artifacts and helping establish a new interpretive cotton garden.
Come prepared to work outdoors, get a little dirty, and contribute to the ongoing preservation of this important historic place.
