Stories in Stone: A Cemetery Discovery Challenge invites participants of all ages to explore Charleston’s historic cemeteries through a self-guided seek-and-find challenge focused on gravestone symbols, inscriptions, notable individuals, and preservation clues. Bring the whole family and discover things you never knew about cemeteries—from hidden meanings carved into stone to the stories of the people buried there.
Start at the Preservation Society of Charleston’s table at Humane & Friendly Cemetery, located in Charleston’s Cemeteries Historic District, to pick up your discovery checklist. Look for our purple signs and PSC flag! Then, explore cemeteries throughout the district at your own pace as you search for the items on your list.
Along the way, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for cemeteries as important historic resources and the craftsmanship, history, and cultural heritage they preserve.
