National Register status opens to the door to eligibility for financial incentives as well as protection.
The National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) is the official list of the nation’s historic places worthy of preservation. Authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Park Service administers the NRHP with the support of State Historic Preservation Offices responsible for overseeing the nomination process.
National Register status opens to the door to eligibility for financial incentives as well as protection from potential impacts of state or federally funded projects. In Charleston, there are multiple National Register Historic Districts, in which individual historic properties contribute to the character of the district.
Outside of National Register Districts, historic properties can also be individually listed on the NRHP, or designated as National Historic Landmarks.
