overdevelopment. This individual will both inform seasoned advocacy staff as well as engage directly with decision-makers and applicants in providing informed, well-researched positions on complex issues of land use law. Their legal skillset will be essential for building greater awareness of how governmental decision-making affects critical issues of interest to the PSC and how individuals and groups can engage to affect these decisions. The person in this role will work cross-departmentally and report to the Director of Public Affairs.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

In executing their work, the LAM will be expected to:

  • Perform legal research, write memos briefing and analyzing core issues, and develop informed comments on critical issues affecting cultural resources in collaboration with PSC advocacy staff;
  • Deliver comments on behalf of the PSC at public meetings before local boards and commissions;
  • Assist staff in evaluating issues and determining priorities for strategic advocacy with a focus on furthering PSC’s mission as a membership organization;
  • Track developments in major litigation and policy reform in South Carolina and at the federal level that affect land use advocacy issues in the Charleston region;
  • Research and document relevant legislation and policies both within Charleston and nationally that enhance stewardship and promote livability.
  • Serve as a liaison to attorneys in the legal community, independently manage contractual relationships for legal services, and support litigation efforts, when necessary;

Required Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school; 
  • Proficiency in legal research and writing;
  • Experience in project management, strategic planning, and budget management;
  • Experience with community outreach.

  • Ability to adapt and respond with a sense of urgency in a fast-paced and evolving working environment;
  • Ability to lead projects effectively, demonstrating excellent collaboration skills with other staff members and external web vendors;
  • Ability to manage time, work independently, and meet deadlines in a remote work environment, if necessary;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Outstanding organizational skills and attention to detail.

Salary Range

$65,000 to $75,000 based on experience

Work environment

This position operates in a professional office setting.  Work schedule is generally 9am to 5pm with occasional work on evenings and weekends for meetings or programming.
